Scott White notches up game 400
Scott White: 400 Games
Scott White plays his 400th game for Hawthorn Boroondara Cricket Club (“HBCC”) this weekend in our vets team. Scott is the first player to achieve a significant milestone at our newly merged club.
Whitey’s senior cricket career began at the former Box Hill South Cricket Club where he played approximately 90 games. Whitey saw the error of his ways and joined Riversdale Boroondara Cricket Club, as we then were, in 1992.
Whitey has been an extremely talented batsman at HBCC, scoring over 12,000 runs with 19 centuries and a career high 204 not out in 2012/3. Whitey is also a gifted keeper, which is almost an excuse for having a cricket bag the size of small shipping container. He has bowled extremely infrequently, with good reason, and has dismissed 6 very unlucky batsmen.
Whitey has been a premiership captain 3 times and played in 5 premierships overall.
Although Whitey has had an outstanding cricket career, he suffers the same problem as Mark Waugh. Whitey’s sister, Christina Matthews, remains Australia’s most capped female player and holds the record for most dismissals by a keeper.
Scott has also made a tremendous off field contribution to cricket generally at our club. He prefers to work quietly in the background on catering, facilities, equipment (forever hassling captains about where the used game balls are) and the many other operational issues essential to the running of a cricket club. He is not overly partial to being fussed over or photographed, as is obvious from the portrait accompanying this article. Scott is an example of a generation of volunteers at sporting clubs who are unfortunately in diminishing supply.
Whitey has won great respect and made many friends at opposition clubs. It’s rare to play against a team where Whitey is not well known to at least one, and probably a few, opposing players.
Scott is a friendly man with a sharp sense of humour. This is never better on display than serving behind the bar, playing in his beloved Aquarium team or at weekly match reviews where he and fellow veteran, Greg Smith, comprise our self-appointed, and particularly unreasonable, fines committee. Fines for a duck or dropping catch are ok but a 2023/4 proposal to fine players who finished 0 not out or bowlers who fail to take a wicket has been rejected by the playing group. Whitey and Greg ‘s logic is that the aim of the game is to make runs and take wickets.
Whitey will play his 400th game at home at his beloved Victoria Road Reserve, a place where he has both had so much enjoyment himself and contributed greatly to the enjoyment of others.
Scott was made a life member of Boroondara Cricket Club in 2009 and all associated with HBCC are extremely appreciative of the commitment Scott has made to our club. Long may it continue.
Great effort Whitey on this fantastic achievement.
