Round 1 Wrap

Some great matches in synthetic and turf in Round 1

Our favourite pic of the week.

Despite getting the early jump on the season over their turf counterparts, the synthetic grades were reduced to ordinary conditions in week two. But there was still some exciting matches. Newcomers Holy Trinity booked an impressive nine wicket win in their first ECA Senior match accounting for Burwood Uniting Canterbury; Matthew O'Brien (61*) top scored for the hosts. They chased 174 in just 35 overs. Clifton Hill's Matty Lynas and James Wright (5/16) ran through the defending Macgibbon Shield champs Deepdene Uniting who posted just 118 - but Luka McGuinness-Smith (4/52) and Woody Wilson (2/18) returned the favour and Clifton Hill (111) who definitely let this one get away. And what about this match? St Paul’s/Oakleigh Districts Nos 9,10&11 Aaron May (c), Zac Miller and Sean McKay (vc) faced 112 balls to defy the rampaging Trinity Willison a win, hanging on by just one wicket. TWs Skipper Nick Sparks hit a double century (203 from 158) and took four wickets in an outrageous start to his season. STC South Cambwerwell posted a healthy 238 with Alexander Brebner Griffin hitting a patient 79. With Glen Waverley only having  22 overs to bat, this one was always headed for a draw.

In Burt, Toorak Prahran’s Max Chisholm hit a ton (100* off 87) to guide his side to a first round win agains Clifton Hill.

In LOC1 home side Northcote United pulled up just four runs short in their chase agains Knox Churches. Nos 10 & 11 Ted Smith and Xavier Garita had a dip at the end -posting a quick fire 25 run partnership, but to no avail. Sanka Senanayake hit an impressive 105 from 96 for the victors. Young gun Hayden Kenny hit a quick fire 81 from 61 for the hosts.

In turf, newly promoted Edinburgh made a massive statement to the Dunstan Competition, knocking off last years Grand Finalists Mont Albert, at Mont Albert.  Edinburgh skipper Suraj Kaluhalamulla relished the promotion hitting a ton for his team - 116 from 113 batting first. For Mont Albert they will be thrilled with their debutant, young Jack Massey who hit a polished 40 in his Dunstan debut.

At Zerbes, Dunstan star Matt Vaiano (109) hit a run-a-ball ton in his first dig for the season - setting up a competitive 213 against the defending champs North Balwyn. But a super top-order effort, lead by Louis Macciocca (105 from 124) saw them overhaul the total in the 39th over.  Old Carey and Glen Iris made short work of their respective run chases against Bulleen and Canterbury to book their first 6 points of the season.

In Wright, Marcellin’s Jesse McCarthy (5/20) and 38 demonstrated why he will be one to watch in that grade this season - the added responsibility of Captain not phasing him as the Eagles scored a thrilling one wicket win against the home side Deepdene Uniting. At Mazenod College, the home side fell agonisingly one run short in their chase against Heathmont.  Joseph Paulas (27) and Hugh Paulus (33) nearly pulled of a miracle with their 10th wicket 63 run partnership. At Mulgrave, Zac Rahman hit a six off the penultimate ball of the innings to snatch a thrilling one wicket win for the hosts against East Malvern Tooronga.

As Round 2 rolls around, we are all keeping our fingers crossed rain will be just the occasional shower and we will get a full day in on Saturday.
