Vets Cricket at Dingley - much more than just cricket
A Celebration of Unity, Success, and Mental Health Awareness
As we embark on another exciting season of Veterans Cricket in the Eastern Cricket Association (ECA), we reminisce about Dingley Cricket Club's (DCC) incredible journey. The pinnacle of last year’s campaign was the Division 1 Grand Final, a thrilling contest that united the local community in support of their team. It wasn’t just about winning; it was about the spirit of the game and the sense of belonging that Veterans Cricket fosters.
Reflecting on the victory, DCC skipper Damien Jordan shared, “Our local community really got behind our Vets team. It was a hard-fought and highly entertaining contest against quality cricketers and blokes at Melbourne Uni. The carnival atmosphere was designed for families with food, face painting, kids' games, and music. It was played in the true spirit of the game.” This Grand Final encapsulated everything Dingley Cricket Club stands for: unity, community spirit, and respect for the game.
Both Damien Jordan, an accomplished all-rounder, and Leigh Booth, DCC’s dependable opening batsman, capped off their stellar performances by being selected to represent Victoria at the National Championships in Brisbane in 2023. Their selection was a proud moment not just for the players, but for the entire club. It demonstrated the level of talent and commitment fostered through Dingley’s Veterans program.
This season, the club aims to take things even further by fielding two Over 40s teams. With a star-studded lineup, keep an eye on some of the names that are ready to make an impact: ex-professional cricketer Danny Law, known for his vast experience; the powerful hitter Tarek Moughanie; and opening bowler Chris Pereira.
Dingley’s Veterans program, now four years strong, was founded with a purpose beyond cricket—addressing the importance of mental health among men over 40. “We started the Vets program to get older guys together because mental health is so prevalent in men over 40 these days,” says Damien. For many, this program has become a sanctuary, offering friendship, physical activity, and emotional support.
Adding to the excitement this year is DCC's brand new state-of-the-art facility, which features a large balcony that overlooks the grounds. As Damien proudly mentions, “We have a new state-of-the-art facility with a large balcony that I can’t wait to have a few drinks on, a BBQ, and beers after the game with my teammates and the opposition.” It’s not just about the game; it’s about fostering relationships that last beyond the pitch, in true Dingley fashion.
With a strong community backing, a new facility, and two teams ready to compete, Dingley Cricket Club’s Veterans program continues to grow as a beacon for both cricket and mental health support. Whether you're a former player looking to get back in the game or someone new to the sport, Dingley’s doors are wide open.
