Vale Bert Tilley 1932-2023

It is with deep sadness Hawthorn CC announce the passing of West Hawthorn CC Founding Player, leading run scorer and Hall of Famer, Bertram (Bert) Tilley, on the 20 December, 2023.
Bert Tilley, a Right hand top order batsman/wicket keeper, was a Foundation Member of West Hawthorn CC in 1947/48 as a 15 year old. He was the inaugural Premiership Captain of the Club in 1957/58 against Deepdene CC. Bert represented the ESCA U/23 team on 3 occasions and went on to play 311 Games for the Club up until 1993/94, and in the Vets in 1998/99.
Between 1973/74 and 1978/79 Bert played at Ashwood CC scoring 945 runs and the A-Turf 1973/74 Premiership and with Hawthorn - East Melbourne CC where he scored around 1,000 runs.
For WHCC Bert scored 11,235 runs at an average of 31.61, including 17 centuries, 71 50’s and a H.S. of 198 in 1948/49. He won the 1XI Batting Award on 21 occasions, took 526 catches, 38 stumpings and 36 wickets. He became a WHCC Life Member in 1972 and a Hall of Fame Legend in 1997, in the Club’s 50th year celebration.
In the ESCA Centenary celebrations in 2002/03 Bert was one of 3 WHCC players nominated for the ESCA Turf Team of the Century and was shortlisted in the top 33 players. He was one of a hand full of ESCA players to score over 10,000 runs and finished in the Top 10 batting averages on 10 occasions. Bert made over 13,000 total ESCA runs and won 3 ESCA competition batting averages. (ref: A Century of Cricket, Colin Martin, 2002.)
The Club sends its deepest sympathies to his wife Cathy Tilley (LM), his 3 sons, David, Ross and Marcus (LM) whom all play(ed) for the Club, daughter Leana and son-in-law Cameron Joyce (WHCC player) along with all members of the Tilley family.
