Garry Male, champion of ECA pulls up stumps

Garry is a passionate advocate of community cricket

35 Years of Service

After 35 years of service to the ECA, Garry Male has pulled up stumps on his umpiring career and (almost) all of his administrative roles with the ECA. The highly respected umpire and administrator has been a key figure for the Association. He has had numerous roles from Junior Chairman, ECA President, Umpire Manager, Life Member and long serving umpire where he has umpired over 400 games. He and Col Martin orchestrated the move to merge with EDCCA.

He was responsible for the change from a tribunal to a Disinplinary Committee where the original fixed penalties were put in place and adherence to the Code of Conduct was paramount. Garry is a fierce supporter of cricket and the ECA who never takes a backward step when defending what he believes is right for the game.

Whilst ill health has forced Garry's hand, he assures us that he will be a keen spectator in the season ahead and happy to support the umpires appointment role next year. Last Saturday Garry umpired his last match, the McCarthy Shield Grand Final between Deepdene Uniting and Malvern Valley at Hayes Paddock. Deepdene Uniting President Rory Smeaton provided a wonderful tribute to Garry at the presentation ceremony which was warmly received by all the players and spectators.  Which was a wonderful touch. On behalf of the ECA community, I wish to thank Garry for his tireless commitment and work for the ECA and we all look forward to his ongoing presence in our Association.
