Umpires Manager

Position Description

The Umpires Manager plays a pivotal role in overseeing and supporting the umpiring operations for ECA, reporting to the Executive through the General Manager. The Umpires Manager must ensure that the umpires are efficient, fair, and professional and contributing to the integrity of the game. The key responsibilities of this executive appointed role include, however are not limited to, the following.

1. Retainment, Recruitment and Selection

The Umpires Manager is responsible for retaining and recruiting umpires, in liaison with the Appointments Officer, to ensure that the umpires meet the standards required for officiating in ECA/EGWC matches.

2. Training and Development

The Umpires Manager is responsible for organising training and development programs for the ECA umpires to improve their skills and knowledge of the game. This will include both technical training (rules of the game, decision-making, etc.) and interpersonal skills (communication, conflict resolution, etc.)

3. Performance Monitoring and Evaluation 

Monitor and assess the performance of umpires during matches, often using feedback from players, coaches, and match officials. This helps identify areas for improvement, providing support for continued development and ensuring that the right umpire is assigned to each game based on their experience and expertise.

4. Disciplinary Actions

If an umpire is involved in any disciplinary issues or poor performance, the Umpires Manager may need to handle the investigation and take appropriate action, which could include further training, warnings, or removal from certain assignments.

5. Liason Between Umpires and Key Stakeholders

The Umpires Manager serves as an important communication link between the umpires and other key stakeholders of the game and ensures that any concerns or feedback from the umpires are addressed.

6. Compliance with Rules and Regulations 

The Umpires Manager ensures that the umpires follow cricketing regulations, codes of conduct, and guidelines laid out by governing bodies such as ECA and/or national cricket organisations.

7. Performance Evaluation

The performance evaluation and assessment of umpires to ensure they meet the standards necessary to officiate at various levels of ECA/EGWC.

8. Umpire Well Being

The Umpires Manager will consider the well-being of umpires, to the best of their ability, making sure umpires are mentally and physically fit for their demanding role and offer support in terms of health and safety.

9. Important Attributes

  • Organisational Skills

The ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively and efficiently is critical in this role.

  • Communication

Clear communication with umpires, the Umpires Appointments Officer, ECA executive and the umpires association as required.

  • Knowledge of Cricket

A good understanding of the sport, the role of the umpire, and the laws of cricket are vital.

  • Problem-Solving

The ability to handle conflicts or unexpected changes, strong organisational and interpersonal skills are important.
