Canterbury Cricket Club are the Over 50 Vets, Div 1 Champions for season 2023-24. They proved too strong for the defending champs Mont Albert - chasing down their target of 157 in the 32nd over. The match was played at Highfield Park.
Player of the match Gregory Powick (41 ret) and Paul O'Grady (41 ret) set up the win. Mont Albert had a positive start to their innings with both Pat Hawkins (40 ret) and Brad Woolhouse (40 ret) getting among the runs. However the Canterbury bowlers picked up regular wickets - and despite a lower order 21 from Andrew Youren, their total of 157 looked short against the strong Canterbury batting line up. Which it proved to be.
After the match both skippers, Adam Powick (Canterbury) and Michael Massey (Mont Albert) paid credit to thier respective sides and were generous in their praise of their opponents. Umpire Eugene 'Fitzy' Fitzwilliam, congratulated all for the game and thanked Jeff Mollision for all his work for the Vets competition. Fitzy also took the opportunity to remind players about the importance of looking after their health and how the Vets competition is a great celebration for mens health.
Congratulations are also in order to North Aphington - they defeated Mazenod to claim the Div 2 Grand Final.
North Alphington 6/193 d Mazenod 175
