ECA Presidents Welcome Message 2026-27 Season

ECA Presidents Welcome Message 2026-27 Season

Neil Dalrymple ECA Admin 09 October 2026

Welcome to Season 2026-27

As we embark on the 2026 - 27 season, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all players, officials, volunteers, supporters and member clubs across the Eastern Cricket Association.

I would like to sincerely thank the members of the ECA Executive, our General Manager Peter Simpson, our sub-committee members, umpires and volunteers whose dedication and hard work continue to ensure the successful operation of our Association.

In particular, I acknowledge the leadership and commitment of our committee heads who play such an important role in the ongoing growth and development of our competitions. I also thank Sharon Lynas from Cricket Victoria for her continued support and guidance.

A special thank you goes to our over 80 member clubs and the countless committee members, coaches, team managers and volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes each week. Community cricket simply cannot function without your contribution.

Over recent years the ECA has experienced significant change. Following the departure of long-serving Executive members Rod Patterson and Greg McLeod, we have continued the important transition of knowledge and governance within the Association. The appointment of Peter Simpson as our full-time General Manager and Dani Hedley as Assistant Manager has strengthened the ECA's capacity to support clubs and members, and we continue to refine our systems and processes to deliver a better experience for everyone involved.

It is particularly pleasing to see continued growth in our girls’, women’s and veterans’ competitions, reflecting the increasing diversity and inclusiveness of cricket throughout our region. We also welcome new clubs that have joined the ECA and look forward to supporting them as they become part of our cricketing community. Our Association now boasts a broad geographic footprint stretching across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs and beyond, providing opportunities for more people than ever to enjoy the game.

As we look ahead to the season, I encourage all participants to embrace the values of respect, fair play, inclusion and enjoyment. Cricket has a unique ability to bring people together, build lifelong friendships and strengthen communities, and the ECA is proud to play its part in fostering these outcomes.

On behalf of the Executive, I wish all clubs and participants a successful, enjoyable and memorable 2026 - 27 season. I look forward to visiting clubs throughout the year and seeing firsthand the continued growth and success of our Association.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Eastern Cricket Association, and best wishes for a fantastic season ahead.

Kind regards,

Neil

Thinking of playing in the ECA?  Here are some of the frequently asked questions about our association.

Frequently asked Questions (FAQs) about the ECA

By joining one of our affiliated clubs. On our website we have this club finder page which has the contact details of all our clubs. If you have problems getting through to your preferred club, please contact us and will put you in touch direcly with someone from the club who will be able to help you.

The starting point is getting in touch wih one of our affiliated clubs who have a junior program. We would be more than happy to point you in the right direction - feel free to contact us. The ECAs various Junior Cricket Competition cater for all ages and all abilities. Our Junior Mixed competition is played on Friday nights (Under 14, 16,18s), Saturday Mornings (Under 10s, U12s) and Sunday Mornings (Under 9s & Under 10s). Our girls-only grades (Stage 1,2,3) are played on Wednesday evenings. If your child is just starting out and is Under 10 - we recommend they start with the Woolworths Cricket Blast program. Most of our ECA clubs who have a junior program will have a WCB program.

Our club's set their own playing membershp fees for a season. It varies from club to club. But typically, clubs will levy a flat membership fee for the season. And its common for a match day fee to paid to cover the cost of the match ball and umpires.

Our highest grades - Dunstan Shield (Turf), Macgibbon Shield (Synthetic), McCarthy Shield (Limited Overs Competition) are played at a very high standard. A number of former Victorian Premier Club cricketers play in the ECA, and we have one former Test player as well. You can check out our videos on our social channels to get a sense of the standard. The ECA works on the promotion/relegation grading method, so clubs/teams are always incentivised to do their best at all grades.

The various ECA competitions accommodate players of all ages and abilities. When you are doing your homework as to which club you would like to join, check to see what grades they are drawn to play in and/or if they are intending to enter a new side for the upcoming season. We have rules that deter clubs from stacking sides (eg players playing out of their grade just to qualify a side for finals). If you are over 40, and looking for a more social-grade environment, you may want to consider our Veteran's competitions - these are played on every second Sunday during the season.

The ECA runs both Turf and Synthetic graded competitions. Fixtures are a combination of two-day and one-day formats. We also have dedicated Limited Over Competition (LOC) grades, which are played exclusively on synthetic surfaces. Many of our clubs field sides in both Turf and Synthetic grades.

Yes. The Kookaburra T20 Cup is a sepaate 'open' Grade played mid-week during the season. All Clubs are eligible to enter a team in the Competition. It's a popular format as it crosses over the regular Saturday Turf and Synthetic grades. For example, we often see a traditonal Macgibbon (Synthetic) Club competing against a Dunstan (Turf) Club. And Clubs that have First XIs competing in the second and third tier weekend grades competing against first-tier grades. Here is the match report from last seson's Grand Final between Mulgrave and Glen Iris

Yes there is. This is especially releavant to players who have been playing high-grade cricket in other Associations, including Premier Cricket. This table outlines the criteria for joining the ECA. If you have any questions, please contact Peter Simpson, General Manager of the ECA. His contact details are here.

Yes. We welcome men and women who would like to umpire in the ECA. You are required to meet a mininimum accrediation level (Cricket Australia Level 2) to start.
